"You're 35?!": Mary's Skin Care on Beverly:
Good skin and money are two things I don't have, and, after wasting years in and out of plastic surgeon's offices, laser clinics, etc., I was ready to give up. When it came to my skin, there was so much wrong: I was one of those 80s teens who thought unloading a bottle of baby oil onto myself and baking in the sun for hours had no downside; not to mention having smoked cigarettes in my 20s most certainly added to the wrinkles. Lastly, I'm a public school teacher, one of the more stressful of job choices according to just about any survey, and I'm Irish: We don't age well.
The night before I went to Mary's on Beverly for the first time, I'd attended a dinner party and informally surveyed my friends about why they complained about aging skin and cellulite, yet had never done much about it. This is what they mentioned:
1) High cost of maintenance-the bill you get for botox is enough in and of itself to create more wrinkles
2) Pain/invasive procedures-Pain because, well, it's painful, and invasive means time off work, which means more to do when you get back--more stress-- more wrinkles-back to square one.
3) Smarmy sales staff- Some of my friends had considered getting a procedure, but had been turned off by the slick, phony sales staff pushing for the hard sell.
The night before my appointment with Mary, I reflected on my friends' valid points and considered canceling. I got her voicemail: "This is MAry. I'm busy making someone else beautiful right nOW-ow. Leave a message. Bye-BYe". Her sing-songy yet sincere voice was so engaging that I decided to keep my appointment.
Mary is her own poster child: She is 45, but looks like she's in her late 30s. Just check out this picture: (insert picture of Mary)
I asked Mary's assistant, Nisha, why her boss is so generous and meticulous, to which she said, "I think it's because Mary had such bad skin when she was a teenager and she just, truly, really wants to make people feel better about themselves." Also, Mary makes every procedure as painless as possible-something many estheticians don't bother to do.
If I were brave enough, I'd show a picture, right about here, of how worn-down, wrinkly and red I looked before Mary, but, trust me: It wasn't pretty. Since starting with Mary, people constantly say things like, "You're thirty-five?! I thought you were twenty-eight!" I hardly wear make-up anymore, whereas I wouldn't leave the house without piling it on before.
What I also like so much about Mary is what she won't do for me; she will not sell you something she doesn't believe in. I pleaded for her to give me IPLs (Intense-Pulse Light Therapy) for the discoloration in my face, but she said that it was not due to broken capillaries, but rather something intrinsic, like a hormonal imbalance, and that I should hold off until I drank more water daily and consulted a dermatologist.
In addition to the usual procedures one gets from any esthetician in this town, Mary applies permanent make-up; I had her add color to my lips, which have paled since I was younger. She "cheated" them out a little, creating more symmetry and fullness. I've received so many compliments and I don't have that ducky-look that many women experience with the use of collagen. For a woman who's looking to add the illusion of fullness to her lips, she'll be happy to know that for the same price as getting a "filler" once and having to go back every three months, you can have permanent make-up that will last you for far longer and you have the benefit of permanent color.
